Why removing names does not make data anonymous

Free text, unusual events and combinations of attributes can reveal people even after direct identifiers are removed. Privacy assessment is separate from data-quality assessment.

Map direct and indirect identifiers

Names and contact details are obvious. Dates, precise locations, rare job roles, project descriptions and quoted messages may be identifying in combination. Attachments and file metadata need attention as well as database columns.

Preserve only necessary relationships

Consistent replacement identifiers can preserve useful joins, but pseudonymous data can still carry identification risk. Keep any mapping key separately controlled. Assess whether linking records creates new exposure that was not visible in each source alone.

Review the proposed release

Consider the recipient, available outside information, intended tasks and controls. Document transformations and known limitations. Removing identifiers is one possible measure within a broader privacy process; it does not establish lawful sharing or satisfy every contractual obligation.
